Salem is located in the Willamette Valley, along the Willamette River. It is located 47 miles south of Portland and 64 miles north of Eugene. Salem was founded in 1842 and became the capital of the Oregon Territory, in 1851. Salem was incorporated in 1857. With a population of 156, 955, it is Oregon's third largest city and one of it's oldest. Salem is one of the most agriculturally productive regions in the world.
